29 Jan Veganuary Victories
It may be that you are one of those people who says “Vega – what ?” when you see the title to this article. If you hadn’t heard, this January has seen the third year when the charity Veganuary have supported and inspired people across the globe to try vegan for January to reduce the suffering of animals.
I took the challenge in the first year and as a vegetarian of 25 years, there were many like me wanting a little help to make that final transition; I am pleased to say I haven’t looked back. This year has seen tens of thousands of people take the pledge – including Vivienne Westward and chef Jack Munroe. Some people are starting for health benefits, some for the environment (did you know livestock production creates more CO2 than all modes of transport combined?) and some for the animals. What is so interesting about the class of 2016 is how many are going from confessed meat addicts to trying vegan. What is great too, as we end the month, many of those people are pledging to adopt their new way of life for good. With a plethora of recipes, new tastes and ingredients to try and an online community to answer “what can I use instead of…” type queries, this friendly approach is really working.
It just goes to show, when people are given help and information to try living differently and be more compassionate, we can really seize the opportunity and make change which is good for us, animals and the planet.
